IMPORTING RESCUE DOGS

Again we address the import of rescue dogs into the Spokane/CDA areas.  The community is saturated, and yet, Spokanimal, The Spokane Humane Society, The Kootenai Humane Society, Alternative Rescue from CDA, and others are importing dogs from out of the area.
The shelters utilize pretty much 0 screening.
What are the results of this?
Local dogs are sitting in rescue MUCH longer, instead of four to six weeks, four months to over a year!
We have contacted the TV show; Shelter Me, who does not seem to hear the plight of our own dogs.  Seems like it’s all about their production and making money.  What a shame that these dogs become a commodity!
The rescues are getting owner surrender calls constantly from these poor little dogs who have come in through no fault of their own, nor do they understand the impact they are having on our own area dogs.
SCRAPS is now getting so many more small dogs than ever.  Why?  These dogs are just adopted because they are cute.  Are they house broken?  How do they handle getting mauled my children?  Were they socialized as puppies?  These are the things local rescues know about the dogs they have up for adoption.
If you want to rescue a dog, please get a LOCAL dog. Ask where they came from.  Yakima, California, Wenatchee, just say no to help our local dogs find homes.   Here is a piece from the last SCRAPS Newsletter, the Director; Nancy Hill addresses this very issue.

We do not have an issue with your driving out of the area to find the dog that fits!

And the excerpt on importing animals and the impact on our animal control shelter.

This week alone we have had to turn five dogs away.  All needing rehoming, hardships, deaths, you name it.  One little dog was blind and diabetic, we suggested Double J, don’t know if they could help.  Dog’s owner went to a nursing facility.  They, of course, adopted this dog from a shelter four years ago; the dog is not that old.  Another dog, without an age appropriate adoption.  We wish these dogs well.
And on FB KHS this is the answer I got in regards to some potential homes.

                                                              TICKS

This could be the most important thing that you see me post! Its an epidemic this year, and these things are as lethal as a venomous snake in the wrong senerio! Please not only read it, but share it! Make sure we get the word out about these tics and the disease they carry!
It's summer! Time for camping, hiking and getting outside to play. Don't let those pesky annoying ticks stop you. Here's how with a simple homemade solution!
Repellent for your pets:
For pets, add 1 cup of water to a spray bottle, followed by 2 cups of distilled white vinegar. Ticks hate the smell and taste of vinegar, and will be easily be repelled by this ingredient alone. Then, add two spoonfuls of vegetable or almond oil, which both contain sulfur (another natural tick repellent).
To make a repellent that will also deter fleas, mix in a few spoonfuls of lemon juice, citrus oil, or peppermint oil, any of which will repel ticks and fleas while also creating a nicely scented repellent. Spray onto the pet's dry coat, staying away from sensitive areas including eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals. When outdoors for an extended period, spray this solution on two to three times per day.
For you and your family:
In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of distilled white vinegar and 1 cup of water. To make a scented solution so you do not smell like bitter vinegar all day, add 20 drops of your favorite essential oil.
Eucalyptus oil is a calm, soothing scent that also works as a tick repellent, while peppermint and citrus oils give off a strong crisp scent that also repel ticks.
After mixing the solution, spray onto clothing, skin, and hair before going outdoors. Reapply every four hours to keep ticks at bay, and examine your skin and hair when back inside to make sure no ticks are on the body.
Thank you Roger Howard!

Local Dog needing a home

Happy to announce our pet sitter has openings!

Our home/pet sitter has openings.  Linda Bockenmuehl  (We just call her Linda) and our dogs LOVE her!
She is fastidious, stays 24/7, loves animals and is very trustworthy, FYI.

She charges 25 per day, to stay at your home with your pets!  We always pay her more, especially since she travels from Chewelah.  We have been using her for years.  She’s great. We highly recommend her.

Tips for Camping with Your Dog

One of our favorite shampoo bars.
I use Rosemary and Lavender because?  I have no real reason!
You can find them on www.dermagic.com or amazon.com and I'm sure many other places.

Someone asked for recipes for home made treats.

We don't make them, no time!  We do use fresh food from the fridge.  Cheese, steamed veggies, a little left over meat.  Seems there is always something in there for the crew for a treat.

Dog thefts!

Anyone in the Spokane/CDA areas probably remembers local news reports last year.  We used to take our dogs with, weather permitting, no longer.

Ran into some interesting links today.

Most stolen breeds.

5 Ways Thieves Could Steal Your Dog

We keep our gates locked.  So careful, but, anything can happen as things seem to continue getting worse out there.
